5-HTP or "hydroxy L-tryptophane" (5-Hydroxytryphophan): is a naturally-occurring amino acid and is the precursor and metabolic intermediate in the biosynthesis of the neurotransmitters serotonin and melatonin from tryptophan. PASSION FLOWER EXTRACT 4:1 (Passiflora incarnata): Is added to the Tense Ease blend because its synergy with kava kava improves the effect of kava. Low levels of serotonin have been identified in passion flower which may help explain its use as a natural calmative, mood shifter and aid to concentration. Active ingredients include glycosides, flavonoids, harmine and harmane alkaloids (passiflorine, aribine, loturine, yageine) and naltol.

ST. JOHN'S WORT (.3% hypericin standardized) (Hypericum perforatum): It has been widely used as an antidepressant. A four week study was conducted using Hypericin perforatum .3% with 105 patients suffering mild depression. Over 67% of patients experienced good response with no adverse effect. The effect mechanism is believed to be the inhibition of monoamine oxidase (MAO).
